Shuttleworth raves about Dell XPS13 developer edition

At the OpenStack summit last month we caught up with Ubuntu and Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth.

Below is a quick snippet taken from our chat with Mark where he talks about the Dell XPS 13 developer edition aka Project Sputnik.  Mark dubs the system “freakin’ awesome” and the “environment of choice for anyone doing web or cloud development.”  🙂

Ubuntu is such a nice and solid system for development. We use it at work (mainly on our servers) but I’ve been using it on my laptop for the last 4 years.

Hardware support on Ubuntu is really great and your organization can benefit from lower Total Cost of Ownership with an Ubuntu solution as opposed to a Windows-only solution. There are no license fees when adopting Ubuntu, however some re-training of employees may be required. Fortunately, people are used to all sorts of computing devices (every phone has a different interface, every website has an interface) that the cost of re-training should be low.

Hello there! I’ve been the proud owner of a Sputnik 2 for about a week now. I’m still shocked at how good it is.

Ordering from Dell Canada was remarkably painless. I even had to correct the purchase because of a discount code that I hadn’t applied properly. The Dell representative was very helpful and had things going properly for me in minutes.

I’m a Systems guy by day and a small web business owner after hours. The Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition is exactly the kind of laptop I’ve been looking for. The screen is fabulous, and Dell’s Ubuntu integration and co-operation is to be commended.

As someone who regularly purchases and advises on purchases, I didn’t think I’d ever recommend Dell laptops at work, but the XPS 13 is making me re-think this.

Congratulations to Dell and Canonical for producing such a wonderful machine.

(Now if only the RAM was upgradeable…)

Well, I own one too. And guess what? I’m not a developer, just a computer user who is very very very very happy that he finaly got a very decent machine running Ubuntu. Thanks Dell: you should also promote this system for ‘users’ not only ‘developers’. I’ts got what it takes to blast away those Macbook airs.
