Today we’d like to announce that the new XPS 13 developer edition (7390) will soon be available in the US, Canada and Europe. The new developer edition, based on Intel’s 10th Gen Core™ U series processors, is part of Dell’s new consumer PC portfolio that is being unveiled today.
These systems represent the 9th generation of the XPS 13 developer edition and will come with the Killer™ AX1650 (2×2) built on Intel WiFi 6 Chipset. The new 7390 systems will co-exist alongside the current 9380 XPS 13 developer edition.
Timing
The first wave of the new XPS 13 developer editions will debut on September 5th in both the US and Europe and will be based on the 10th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-10210U processor (the systems will be available two weeks later in Canada).
In October the lineup will more than quadruple with the addition of systems based on Intel’s 10th Gen Core™ U series processors — with i7 hexacore along with additional i5-based systems.
Project Sputnik rolls on
The XPS 13 developer edition is the cornerstone offering in the Project Sputnik portfolio. If you’re not familiar with it, Project Sputnik was kicked off nearly seven years ago with the goal of creating an offering driven by input from the developer community. Sputnik began as an exploratory effort but thanks to the interest and passion of the community the project became a product. The system being announced today, the 7390, represents the 9th generation of that initial offering.

*Note: In the US and Canada the developer edition is only available in the “For Work” section

I would love to expand the number of countries we offer the developer edition again. The decision whether or not to offer a model is made by the regions. They have a fixed number of systems they can offer and they optimize based on customer demand. That being said let me go back to the regions and see if we can convince some people 🙂

Wondering why the choice of lpddr3 versus lpddr4. Is this a market availability thing? Because otherwise lpddr4 uses less power is faster, etc , don’t see any negative impact . Except availability 🤔

Sadly, I’m all too aware. I’ve been patiently waiting for the Icelake version (quietly hoping a 32GB version will also come along), so my biggest disappointment really is that this announcement is lacklustre in both CPU and memory terms.
I’m an avid fan of the XPS 13 Developer editions – I’ve owned two since 2012, and always encourage others to buy them. (Dell’s support of Linux is a major reason for this.)
If Intel can nolonger deliver on the CPU/GPU tech any-more, then maybe it is time Dell took a swig from the AMD cup. If the next release isn’t icelake, and doesn’t have a 32G RAM offering, I personally won’t hold on any longer – I’ll just move elsewhere.
On that point, the latest Asus Zenbooks are looking quite nice, albeit also lacking a 32GB option – but with the newest AMD Ryzen mobile, it sure is a tempting alternative and well priced (but they’re way out of the league in terms of build quality, compared to the XPS 13s, and their out of the box Linux support is non-existent).

After all these years of problems on Linux with the “Killer WIFI” Dell again comes out with a laptop with this card O_O
I have a 9380 with Killer 1435 and I am so disappointed with how it works. I would not have bought this notebook had I known before.
Don’t get me wrong, the 9380 is a dream notebook, it’s wifi card is a nightmare. In the same price range is the 7400 which has an Intel card, much safer choice.

What are the chances of a Dev (linux) version of the XPS 15 for those of us who like a bit more real estate when coding and travelling? The usual response is that you don’t have the resources to validate the OS on the larger model, so I’ll give you an out – offer a bare metal XPS 15 – I don’t need you to validate the OS on the laptop, I’ll just be installing my preferred distro anyway, I just don’t want to pay Microsoft for something I’m not ever going to use – you can even keep the price the same and pocket the difference.

Hi there. Wonderful news! It’s time to ask my employer to upgrade my aging 9343.
I would do it right away but there’s no option for a US or US international keyboard layout here in Italy (same problem with the windows version).
It’s a developer edition. It should be available with the US or US International layout from the get-go.
We’re faced with the same issue every time there’s a new model. Someone at Dell Europe (or Italy) doesn’t understand that “Developer Edition” means it’s for developers.
The Italian layout is not the best choice for writing code.
Is there any chance we’ll get the US layout option soon?

Where’s the right place to report bugs and issues with those new devices? My new XPS 13 7390 has major issues: flickering screen (due to panel self-refresh not working correctly), bad power management (device doesn’t reach the low c-states that it should it various situations, for instance after unplugging a USB device).
Dell’s standard support only knows about Windows and doesn’t seem to particularly competent anyway.
