Last January the Dell XPS 13 developer edition (9370) made its debut. Today we’re excited to announce that one year later its successor, the XPS 13 developer edition (9380), is now available in the US, Canada and Europe. (Note: both the 9370 and 9380 will coexist for a period of time.)
Project Sputnik
The 9380 represents the eighth generation of Dell’s Ubuntu-based XPS 13 developer edition series. The first generation of the developer edition debuted over six years ago and it, along with the Ubuntu-based Precision mobile workstations that launched in 2015, make up Project Sputnik. In case you’re not familiar with it, Project Sputnik is Dell’s skunkworks initiative driven by input from the developer community (see the timeline at the end of the post for the complete XPS 13 developer edition progression).
Dell XPS 13 developer edition (9380) — System highlights
Although there are many great features and specs that characterize the latest developer edition (see below), the one that will likely bring the most joy is the new placement of the webcam. In the 9370 the camera is located directly below the screen. In the new 9380 the camera has been moved to the top, providing a much more flattering view of the user while still maintaining the system’s sleek, compact design.
Not only that but the 8th generation developer edition supports Suspend-to-idle natively which allows the system to resume much more quickly from sleep.

The United States and Canada
In the US and Canada there are four base configs that can be configured in a multitude of ways, yielding 22 configurations. These base configs are:

- i7 QC|16GB|256GB|UHD T
(Note: unlike Europe, in the United States and Canada the developer edition can only be purchased in the “For Work” section.)
Europe
Beating the US and Canada to the punch, on January 9th the first configurations of the new XPS 13 developer edition became available in Europe. At the end of last week two more joined to complete the lineup:

Would be a nice machine if it didn’t have that dreaded “Killer WIFI”. That’s a no-go for me. Hopefully Dell offer an Intel WIFI option next year.

What you say was true two years ago. At least with last year’s model, the Wifi was soldered on board. I don’t know about the 9380 – Barton do you know if it’s an M.2 card that can be replaced?

Stay away from Dell XPS. I made the mistake of getting a 9370 on black Friday with 16gb ram. It runs beautifully… Until you let it sleep for an hour or two. Then the battery drains. When you reopen the lid the next day, the bios warns that the battery is critically low. (My $250 Acer Chromebook never has this problem with battery drain. The cb3-451 easily lasts a full week on standby, or 9 hours of constant browsing and typing.)
This is a common problem that affects at least a few generations of the xps line. Search “xps connected standby” or “xps modern standby” to find out more.
Consider yourself warned.

I haven’t contacted Dell. Mine is running Windows, but the hardware is the same. Linux xpsxs have had this problem too, but I believe they can be remedied. I only discovered the problem yesterday. I searched Reddit and found literally dozens of other xps owners expressing the same frustration. I asked my neighbour and he confirmed that it affects his xps as well.
From reading the numerous posts on Reddit, both Dell and Microsoft have managed to botch power management. Dell’s fix was to remove an older version of power management mode called s3 in favor of Windows10 “modern sleep”. That’s what’s causing the rapid battery drain. I believe the BIOS version that had S3 state removed was 1.6.0. I’m not a techie, so that’s all I’ve learned so far.
Maybe it’s not an issue for Linux anymore, but I wouldn’t trust Dell after this letdown.

To follow up, I want to let you and your readers know that I have found a power management setting for my purposes that I’m happy to share. I understand this blog post is aimed at Linux users. So this probably won’t help them unless they’re dual booting Windows 10.
When running on battery power, the Win10 lid-close action defaults to sleep. When putting away the laptop, the battery will drain to critical levels in a matter of hours. If this is a problem for you, try setting your laptop to hibernate when the lid closes.
1. press the Windows key
2. type/search “edit power plan” (or find it in control panel under system&security->poweroptions)
3. click “Change advanced power settings”
4. expand the “Power buttons and lid” options
5. expand the “Lid close action”
6. from the “on battery” menu, select “Hibernate”
7. click “OK”
That’s it. No registry hacks or BIOS rollbacks necessary.
From what I understand, the hibernate mode is a suspend-to-disk. It takes a little longer to wake, and I’m pretty sure the whole system is basically inert – so any background processes or services will also be suspended. If your laptop doesn’t need to be connected to a network 24/7, this should help conserve your battery. In my opinion, this should be the default setting for Windows 10 laptops.
So far it is working very nicely for me and I am now much happier with my XPS 13 investment. If you are having similar battery issues while in Linux, I suggest figuring out what modes might be equivalent to sleep and hibernate and set them accordingly. I wish you all success.

I can confirm. I also ave a 2018 ubuntu xps . batterie drains at sleep. Sleep mode is super fast, but because it drains, i stopped using it 😦 It’s still a great computer, super productivity

Having trouble bringing up the new version on the Dell Canada site.
I can find the 9370 developer edition or the 9380 non-developer version, but not a 9380 developer edition.
If I use the US site and try to “view all configurations” ( https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/dell-laptops-and-notebooks/xps-13-developer-edition/spd/xps-13-9380-laptop/cax13w10p1c603subuntu ) it kicks me back out to https://www.dell.com/en-ca

Dell, get your head in the game and release Ubuntu supported devices worldwide. I’m in Australia and check back too see if and when you will support Ubuntu purchased on the Australian market.
What’s holding you back when support resources are likely accessible through all that work in Dell Tech Support and training in terms of ensuring staff in the field are skilled up likely have online modules they can complete if needed.

I can conform the tb16 works fine with the xps13, we use several xps13 at my company (mine is a 9350, but we’ve got 2x 9370’s too).
The only thing is that firmware drivers for the tb16 are more directed to windows. Fwupd.org does not offer them too, as i have a dual boot i can update the systems. One collegae tried windows togo for this purpase, but its painfully slow to boot taking hours to boot even on fast usbsticks.

Nice to hear, unfortunately I bought the XPS 13 two years ago and I had to return it, due to the noise (Coil Whine) of the motherboard.
Since then, I open a thread on Dell support site asking about a solution, and Dell eingineers cyclically “close” the problem with solutions, but users re-open the issue right after.
@Barton: This is an already known issue since at least 2015. Are the problems of Coil Whine specifically addessed in this hardware upgrade? If yes, what has been changed within the hardware design of the motherboard?
Is it maybe time to try a XPS 13 again?

Is there any chance any of the other color choices (aside from black) will be available for the XPS 13 Developer Edition? Also, I wish there were options to get a 2TB hard drive without the touch screen. As a developer, I’ve never been a fan of touch screens and they’re usually glossier, which I also don’t like. I’m writing this on the original XPS 13 Developer Edition and would love to get another one. If the Developer Edition never gets any other color choices, I would probably buy the Windows version just to get the color I want and then install Ubuntu on it. Just seems rather silly.

thank you for making this possible, I used a XPS13 9350 and im so in love with it that in the first time of my 20 year career I don’t need a new laptop after 3 years..
A few questions though:
– Why aren’t the dutch XPS13 dev versions not deliverable in gold-rose or white? The silver/black doesn’t do the great machine any justice. I’m planning to wrap my laptop after the NBD support ends, but it would be nice if there are more colors available.
– could you give some details on what specific tuning you do what the customized Dell ubuntu images? this would help a lot of ppl within my company as they moved from windows to ubuntu and do a lot of manual tweaking. We saw a lot of dell repository sources on the 9370 dev editions. It would also help me as I like to get the windows version so I have a license of windows for Windows in a VM.
– Will you be supporting TB16 through fwupd.org? bios updates are great through this, but TB16 updates still require Windows. It would be also nice if fwupd.org wouldn’t lag so much behind.

I’d like to see these put onto the UK site also. I appreciate the chat option is there, but I’m not sure how payments would work with that, and I’d want to make price/feature adjustments first anyway, using whatever configurator options are available.

Time for a small moan, I’m afraid, Barton. I’m afraid when I went to Customer Services for assistance, I got a prize turnip instead of a knowledgeable advisor. Feel free to drop me an email if you want to forward it to someone who can arrange the relevant training course!
Also (see below) the Linux machines have disappeared again.
Here’s briefly what happened. A week ago, prior to any Linux models being loaded onto the UK site, I dropped a line to “UKI_Con_Cancellation at dell.com” and asked when the models would appear. I received a reply asking me for the exact spec I am seeking, so a quote could be prepared.
Now, I don’t know what is customisable, so I asked what could be customised – that sounded easier than my asking for things that would not be possible (XPS 13 with 32G RAM please!). I received another reply to “please let me know your requirement”.
So, I suspected Customer Services would be a waste of time, and a couple of Linux machines had by this time emerged onto the site, so I ordered one yesterday (Sunday 3rd March).
I received an unprompted email from the same adviser, notifying me of a flash sale starting today (10% off), which means I have overspent to the tune of £170. No matter, these things happen. I emailed the adviser to say I have already bought a machine, but that the Linux configs have now been removed again, and would he add them again?
The turnip assured me that he would be happy to place an order for me (what, he’d like me to buy a second one?!).
I appreciate it may be unfair to compare the educational standards of a developing country to my own, and it is a great unfairness that he/she has to help people in their second language, with which they might not be completely fluent. Nevertheless, I think I am allowed a bit of frustration, given that all I am after is a bit of acknowledgement and sympathy at my poor luck.
On the plus side, I am rather excited that a new XPS 13 is on its way. I type this on my 9333, which is a little bit over five years old, and still going.

I have some heartening news following my frustrating experience of purchasing a laptop before being offered a flash sale by a sales adviser.
After some deft tweeting and emailing, an Executive Analyst from Global Business Services came back to me to offer me a retrospective discount. It wasn’t quite the same one, but it was gratefully received, and I feel much happier about it.

I would recommend getting in touch with the sales email address (or using the chat widget) and asking if Ubuntu models are available for Canada. The Linux models have disappeared for UK, but they are definitely available – I am awaiting the delivery of mine.

What is the code name of it? I just bought the XPS 13 9380 but the windows version because the dev edition doesn’t come in that new killer frost white color. I plan on running Ubuntu on it, but from the Ubuntu cert, it says it was tested with the oem kernel https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201810-26510/
So I’d like to install 18.04 and get the drivers and updates from dell, and use the OEM kernel. I think they go by code names on http://dell.archive.canonical.com/updates/dists/ And I do not know which to add to get proper support. I would really love the 18.04 OEM image but haven’t had any luck

Seeking GPL source code.
I purchased a 9380 in the US. There was no notice of what OSS open source software (OSS) is included in the product or how to get source code for the GPL licensed code.
(1) How do I get the source code for GPL software on the xps15?
(2) Who do I discuss the failure to provide OSS notices with? My goal is to encourage Dell to provide the proper notices.
I’ve been trying the various Dell support phone numbers and this issue is not in the domain of any group I’ve talked to.

I think the initiative of encouraging major vendors to stick to the spirit and the letter of open source licenses is a very good one. However, I encourage diplomacy as much as possible. “Failure” is a strong word, and may imply a wilful flouting of the (US) laws that you did not intend.
Although “Dell” as an entity is responsible for compliance, ultimately you will need with individuals, and it is ideal if they do not have reason to think they’re being called lawbreakers or cheats. :=)

Typo in item (1). “xps15” should instead be “xps13”. Although I would also like to get the xps15 source since I also have an xps15.

I accept that entirely – it is the curse of the human condition. My point, made in the spirit of helpfulness, is that your readers from Dell may misunderstand the robustness of your comments too, and that may not predispose them to assist you.

I ordered the Dell XPS 13 9380 Developer Edition (Ubuntu) from the UK site. I have to say, for an Ubuntu Certified piece of hardware, and for the hefty price tag, I am disappointed with the bugs I’m encountering (and I’m not the only one).
There are frequent small lockups / freezes where the keyboard and display stops responding for around 1 second (and then all your keypresses appear at once).
There are the frequent display flashes / flickers.
And there are the Wi-Fi crashes from Atheros / Qualcomm / Killer (why do we still not get the Intel chips from the Latitude line-up?)
I am trying to like the device, and I want to support the Ubuntu edition programme / Project Sputnik, but it’s a serious amount of money to spend to have so many annoyances.
I have been trying to report and help debug these in the Ubuntu bug tracker. Some links here (not all mine):

If anyone is reading this and has similar problems on the 9380, please create an account on Launchpad and click “Does this bug affect you?” at the top, to register that you have the same problem, and then you can subscribe to updates on the right-hand side.
Some of these problems seemed to improve when going from 18.04 to 19.04, but some seemed to get worse.
I will also try and report these problems to Dell support to see what the response is.

Consider wiping the SSD drive (via the destroy facility in the BIOS) and install Linux from scratch. I did so with Linux Mint, and it has been nearly perfect.
If that does not work then perhaps you have faulty hardware.
