Not long ago I introduced the next gen of Project Sputnik’s Linux-based Dell Precision Mobile workstations: the 3530, 5530, 7530 and the 7730. At that time the 3530 was available for purchase.

These new thinner, lighter, premium-built Precision mobile workstations come preloaded with Ubuntu and have been RHEL certified. The 7530 and 7730 feature the latest Intel Core and Xeon processors, blazing-fast memory and professional graphics.
Of particular note is the increased core count and memory. In fact the maximum memory has doubled to 128GB which helps with cloud developer local workloads. In the case of the 7730, it supports up to 8TB of PCIe NVME storage, the most PCIe storage on the market today. The 7730 is also the first AI/ML ready mobile workstation available.

RHEL 7.5 certification and drivers
As mentioned above, these systems will be certified for RHEL 7.5 and the needed drivers will be included in the distro. That being said, the AMD and NVIDIA drivers that come with 7.5 are inbox drivers. We will be posting drivers for both graphic cards that will include professional features not included in the inbox drivers. Stay tuned!

Hi Barton, the 7530 ordering page will not allow me to order the 7530 with the Radeon graphics option & Ubuntu as the OS. The Linux drivers support this card so this seems to be a misconfiguration of the ordering page.

Awesome news! I also noticed that two new graphics cards are available for those who need something better than the default Intel Graphics but for which the Quadro P3200 is a bit too much of a price bump… but when I try to select one of these new cards I get this error: “Ubuntu Operating System does not support the WX4150 or WX7100 Graphics Card.”
If I’m not mistaken Linux does offer some support for AMD GPUs. Is Ubuntu support coming for these cards?

Is the (FIPS) fingerprint reader supported this time?
The missing Linux support for the fingerprint reader in my M4800 was a major disappointment.
And when will you start supporting Ubuntu 18.04?

Hi Michael, unfortunately the fingerprint reader is not supported at this time. We’re working with our OS partners to develop comprehensive requirements for Linux fingerprint reader functionality so that we can work with our fingerprint reader vendors on a proper, validated fingerprint reader solution.

The 7530 and 7730 product pages claim that these machines can drive an external monitor at 8K via a single DP 1.4 cable.
Specifically, which graphics cards are required to do this with the 7530 and the 7730?
What about two external 8K monitors (ie. dual Dell UP318K).
I presume that there could be two options:
a) Drive 1 monitor via the DP1.4 connection and the 2nd monitor via an eGFX Breakaway Box 550 & a suitable graphics card
b) Drive both monitors via an eGFX Breakaway Box 550 & a suitable graphics card
What are the suitable graphics cards for (a) and (b)?

Hey Nicolas, here’s what i heard back:
8K monitors are supported by all GFX cards.
8K@30Hz is support with a single DP cable from the mDP port.
8K@60Hz requires a 2 x DP cables, one from mDP port and one from Thunderbolt 3 port with Thunderbolt 3 to DP dongle.
You should not be connected an eGPU box and another device to the Thunderbolt port at the same time. You really should reserve all that bandwidth for the eGPU box.
You can drive monitors via the eGPU box if you wish.

Good to know that an 8K monitor is supported with a single DP cable connected to the mDP port (8K@30Hz).
What about adding a 2nd monitor via the Thunderbolt3 => DP dongle? How much can the internal graphics card handle? 4K? 5K? 8K?
Since there are 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports, how about a third monitor?

Hi, Looking at the Dell Precision 7530 but strangely Ubuntu is “Not” compatible with AMD Radeon graphics. Any update on this?
I have a Lenovo P50 with Nvidia Graphics and most of the time the proprietary drivers work but there are really annoying glitches in the desktop. I want to support AMD with their open source graphics drivers. I would say AMD are the most supported (apart from Intel) on Linux; definitely not Nvidia.

I bought the 7530 with the WX 4150 despite this warning (left a small Windows partition on it) and everything works as expected on kernel 4.17. You can even set DRI_PRIME=1 and use the dedicated GPU for an app while the integrated continues running the desktop. I decided to keep the Windows partition because I found some Dell firmware updates that are only installable from Windows.

That is good to know 🙂 but I would like to not have to purchase Windows as I already have Windows Server licences that I could put on the machine if needed. Will ask them on chat and see what they say!

Hi Barton. As many have pointed out over the past 2 months we cannot place an order for an ubuntu configuration with either of the Radeon options:
“Ubuntu Operating System does not support the WX4150 or WX7100 Graphics Card.”
This of course is not correct, as linux has had support for this hardware for a couple years. This should be a simple tweak to the config dependency matrix, no?

Hi,
I recently bought a 7730 with Ubuntu 16.0.4 and am thinking about returning it due to issues with the TB18DC dock.
My USB keyboard, USB mouse and network connections are not stable at all when connected via the dock. The same devices are fine when connected via the onboard USB ports.
I’m running the latest system BIOS (1.5.2) and the settings are per https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln308303/dell-usb-c-and-thunderbolt-docks-wd15-tb16-tb18dc-d6000-bios-settings-and-driver-installation-for-troubleshooting?lang=en#bios .
I am also mindful of these limitations – https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/sln305753/dell-dock-wd15-dell-thunderbolt-dock-tb16-and-tb18dc-support-for-ubuntu-1604-operating-system?lang=en .
The Dell support site lists no Ubuntu driver or BIOS updates for this dock. The software update utility says everything is up to date when run while the dock is connected and (somewhat) working.
I’m surfing through various pages about similar problems, but haven’t found anything helpful yet. I am in touch with Dell support, but I’m not very confident that they’ll be able to get things working for me.
I have a lot of Linux experience, but not much with this hardware. I’d like to try upgrading to Ubuntu 18.04 and I expect things will work better when I do. First, however, I need to see all the components working as shipped in order to rule out hardware issues (the first unit I received had a bad display), and also so Dell Support can work with a known configuration.
Can anyone tell me how I can get this dock working? I would really like to keep this awesome system, but I need the dock and I won’t run Windows 10.
