Today I am excited to announce the next generation of our Ubuntu-based Precision mobile workstation line. Not only have we rev’d the current line-up but we have also added the Precision 5720 All-in-One. This follows the introduction back in October of the 6th generation XPS 13 developer edition.

How did we get here
Four and a half years ago a scrappy skunk works project by the name of “Project Sputnik” was kicked off at Dell to gauge interest in a developer-focused laptop. The project received an amazing amount of interest and support from the community and as result, nine months later this project became an official product — the ultra-mobile XPS 13 developer edition.

While the XPS 13 was a big hit the team soon started getting a steady stream of requests to add a bigger, beefier system. This caught the attention of team member Jared Dominguez (on twitter) who decided to work on his own time to get Ubuntu running on the Dell Precision M3800 mobile workstation. Jared documented his work and then posted the instructions publicly.
Jared’s efforts got so much interest from the community that a little over a year later it debuted as an official product. A little over a year after that, one Ubuntu-based Precision workstation became four and today we are announcing the next generation of this line-up along with the new Precision 5720 All-in-One.

How do I order a 5520, 7520, 7720 or 3520 today
In the case of the US, you can get to the Ubuntu-based version of the Dell Precision 5520 Dell or Precision 3520, mobile workstation by going to their respective landing pages: Precision 5520, Precision 7520, Precision 7720, Precision 3520. Once there, click on the green “Customize & Buy” button on the right. This will take you to the “Select Components” page where under “Operating System” you choose Ubuntu 16.04 and away you go!

I have the Intel WiFi Link 8260 and it works wonderfully in Linux. I assume the 8265 will work just as well. Can’t comment about the Qualcomm.

Good news, but what about the thunderbolt docking stations (TB15 or TB16) support under Ubuntu with these computers ?
Is there any progress (or hope) to to use the existing TB15 “brick” on a Precision 7710 after an upgrade to 16.04 LTS ?

Could you perhaps give us a rough timeline as to when the developer edition of the new XPS 13 2-in-1 9365 might become available?
I’m saving up to buy the new XPS 13 and would love to know if and when I can expect the developer version to be released.

Do you think there’s any chance we’ll see the XPS DE in India some time soon? You’ve got the Precisions already, and I’d love to be able to get my hands on the XPS (without the NVidia graphics, so I don’t need to do binary blob drivers).

I’m looking for a new personal system, and the XPS 15 line looks fantastic. Is there any chance of getting Ubuntu offered on the XPS 15 machines in the same way as the XPS 13 line?

I really like the 5520, but it would be perfect with a GeForce instead of Quadro option. It’s basically the same as the XPS 15, body-wise. I don’t really require all that horsepower, and the Xeon processor option feels a bit excessive as well. I think there is better pricing for consumers on the XPS line as it’s not marketed to businesses as a workstation.

I ended up ordering the 5520 with Ubuntu 16.04, the i7, the Quadro card, 16GB RAM, 512GB Class 40 SSD, 6 cell battery, and a 5 year warranty with accidental coverage. Hopefully I won’t be disappointed. I am already kind of disappointed at how long it says it will take to ship, especially with next business day shipping

The problem I have with the 5520 is the Maxwell based Quadro GPU, I could do without a dedicated GPU since I don’t like to use the NVidia BLOB drivers, but if I’m forced to get a GPU I might as well get something based on a current architecture so I could do some gaming if I want to.
The XPS 15 is also a lot less expensive so it may be better to just try and get a refund for the bundled Windows license.

I am on the move from Mac to Linux due to the 2016 MacBookPro specs being too disappointing. The new XPS15 with 1050 nVidia seems to be the optimal fit, with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, superior display all in a lightweigth package.
Task is data science development with R and/or Spark. The Quadro M1200 gives about 40% less numeric performance than the Geforce 1050 afaik. What would be the advantage of a 5520 then, besides being the only variant with Ubuntu support?

Hey Barton, so a lot’s happened since that last message – I ended up canceling the 5520 order. There was a certain coupon code that saved me a ton of money, so I actually went with the 5510 instead as the coupon did not work with the 5520. I actually got pretty much the best 5510 possible – Xeon, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB M.2, 6 cell battery, FHD (not a fan of glossy 4K on laptops). I didn’t really like the 14.04 installation on the 5510, as it was a bit dated and didn’t upgrade super cleanly to 16.04, so I wiped it and installed Fedora 25. In Fedora 25, which, yes, I know isn’t supported by Dell, the touchpad works excellently. Everything mostly worked out of the box. This is a very premium machine. My keyboard actually came broken – the ‘p’ key was damaged, but Dell made it right by sending a technician and a new keyboard – fixed within 2 days of getting it, so not a great start but not terrible since they made it right. I’m not sure if this was so easy to get resolved because I purchased 5 years of ProSupport Plus with the system, but either way I’m pleased with how it was handled. The keys are comfortable to type on, and the backlighting is good. I love that the charger has an LED on it. It’s been super useful at night. The backlight for the screen is fantastic, and this is a very nice FHD panel. As far as the Nvidia drivers go – I did have to disable secure boot to get those working, but other than that, all the default BIOS settings worked perfectly with Linux and required very little tweaking. I’ve heard there is horrible coil whine with some of these systems, but mine does not seem to exhibit the problem so far, so I’m happy with that. The machine came with an out-of-date BIOS, so I got a chance to try the fwupd tool in Fedora, and honestly, Dell makes the firmware upgrade process in Linux fantastic. I don’t know any other manufacturer that works so hard to ensure that it works seamlessly like that. While the Precision 5510 is a bit pricier than many other laptops with similar specs, it really does feel premium, and I think I’ll continue to use this laptop for several years.

Hi, I have a precision 5510 running Ubuntu 16.04. I LOVE the machine but have two very nagging issues. One, the mouse at times is a bit jumpy. Two, the wireless tends to not want to connect after closing the lid between walking to meetings and I have to reboot to get connection again. Are there any updated drivers that I can/should install? Can you point me to any resources which might help? I’ve looked everywhere and can’t seem to find an answer.

I have the same machine. The mouse isn’t jumpy with libinput instead of synaptics. It works really well in Fedora. Not so much in Ubuntu out of the box.

I have the same issue on the 5520. I lose connectivity to wired connection and have to reboot to get connected after closing the lid. Did you ever find a solution?

As best I can tell, as long as you don’t have your settings set to suspend, the connection will persist. Screen off is ok.

I’m confused as a potential customer. This blog post clearly states that these laptops come with Ubuntu, however when I click the links there’s Ubuntu nowhere to be seen. It just says it comes with Windows 10 and it’s even offering me an office trial. Ubuntu is nowhere in the “customize and buy” section either. What’s the deal with this?

congratulations for you efforts with the linux community. I have to admit that dell laptops have catched my attention recently !
Just wanted to send you a small feedback…
Here’s my needs ( for sysadmin )
cpu and ram : it’s good thing you propose machine with faster cpu and more ram that are definitively needed for VMs
screen : 1080p, no touch. the 15″ with slim bezel of the xps15 is for me the best compromise between portability and “do a lot’s of things on the screen”. Below 24-27″ I don’t see the purpose of using 4k, especially when it’s 3 hours less on the battery life.
storage : if you install a spinning drive in the xps15 the battery size is smaller, the possibility to install two m.2 sdd and keep a big battery would be great
ports : I just got my hands on a latitude 14″ 72xx that has one full ethernet jack at the back and hdmi / minidp / usb3…and the laptop is still quite slim !
configurations : unfortunately as soon as you want more cpu/memory you must get 4k screen or bigger harddrive…and that’s a deal breaker for me. To be honest it really feels like selling method of the 90′ when one tries to sell you a complete vacuum cleaner system for your house when you just need a sponge….
in conclusion, if I could write a wish list for “my perfect laptop”…
* configuration options that are not linked together at all : so you let customers be free to buy they need.
i.e. i7 4 cores / 16g / 1ssd 128g / 1ssd 512g / 15” 1080p / no nvidia
* a new motherboard with the form factor of the xps15 : with a full ethernet jack (at the back ?), two m.2 ssd slots would be a game changer
* as the hardware compatiblity between linux and freeBSD is quite similar sometimes, why not contact the peoples at trueOS (ex pc-bsd), they build a version of freeBSD for laptop/desktops, I’m sure they would be glad to test it on dell products and it would be a step into Lenovo’s territory…

With the Ubuntu OS (16.04), when I pick the NVidia card, I get a caveat about processor compatibility. I get a caveat with a second drive (SSD) as well. I get the impression these are “at your own risk” features.

It seems like Dell is trying to configure these machines to work with Ubuntu, but they aren’t really building a machine for it. In other words, it looks like they are trying to find a compatible machine and make Ubuntu work on it rather than planning this before the machine is produced. Why not start at the factory and get hardware that will work in the first place? I am sure there are some challenges with this solution but it seems like a name like Dell would have some pull at the factory making these “boxes”. I have been following the Ubuntu “effort” by Dell and have yet to buy a machine because there always seems to be problems. My current laptop is a Lenovo X1 Carbon 3rd gen which isn’t perfect with Linux Mint and maybe it has the same issues the Precision 55X0’s have. I don’t know . . . I would like to buy a Precision 5510 or 5520 but I just don’t really see enough advantage over the one I use now. Maybe one day Dell will get away from providing a tweaked-out distribution and work on getting the hardware and software to integrate like Apple does and Microsoft is working on now. The problem with doing this before was you didn’t have access to the source code, but that hasn’t been a problem for a while now. Maybe the trackpad company doesn’t want to help you make the trackpad Linux compatible?! I don’t know how they did it but Apple made theirs compatible with OS X (BSD-ish, Next Steppy). So, it must be possible. If there are any hardware design engineers at Dell (for laptops hopefully) maybe they can help the Ubuntu tweaker guys solve at least the problems that seem to never go away like sleep mode or a trackpad that really works as expected. I got excited when I saw the Precision 5520 comes with the Ubuntu option! I learned that I completely missed the 5510 that had it too. It just seems to me that if you have the source code and hardware engineers/designers then you really don’t have many excuses as to why this doesn’t work better than it does. Intel even provides drivers as far as I remember. What else is there that isn’t built on the motherboard? The screen and the trackpad? I don’t understand why sleep and suspend seem to be big challenges either. I realize software isn’t perfect and fixing it challenges all of humanity but hopefully we can start moving closer to the OS and the hardware working better together. I’ve spent 15 years hoping this will come to a better place than it has, but in a couple of years the only “electronics” I will need is the one wire going to the engine on my tractor from the starter.

To fix the problem with the jumpy mouse of the Dell Precision 5510 laptop in Ubuntu 16.04.2 I just install libinput and configure it, is working good, no more jumpy mouse anymore.
I write down the instructions in a little gist:

Hi Alan,
I am using the laptop as my main computer to daily work, I am an AWS Cloud Engineer, then my daily basics are: Using emacs to create cloudformation templates and development of python scripts and groovy scripts for automation with Jenkins, and test deployments with Vagrant, Packer, VirtualBox and Docker.
Under that use pattern, I am not experimenting over-heating, but to be honest, I am not using the 8 cores all time, only during the local deployment tests using docker swarm.

Thanks for your reply – I got the 5510 and just used your solution to fix the mouse – also was able to set up the middle click with Option “MiddleEmulation” “True”.
I am running into an issue with wifi/ethernet when I close the lid – suspend seems to break the wifi and/or ethernet connection – cannot get it back unless I restart.
Have you run into the same problem? Do you know of a solution? My search so far is not fruitful.

I have a question about grabbing a DELL Precision (say 3510 or 5510 or 3520 or 5520), probably with 6th gen i7 (more likely to be compatible) and Win7 and making a dual boot with linux 16.04LTS (worst case 14.04LTS).
Since the customize menu on the US website gives the choice of Win7 or Ubuntu 14.04 I would think this should work out of the box, does it? Or are there some special drivers setup when DELL installs Ubuntu in the factory (e.g., is the Ubuntu DELL version same as version from canonical?)
Does anyone have experience with dual boots and/or information about the heat performance of these units when doing data intensive calculations? Thank you. Alan

I recently buy the machine Dell Precision 5510 because this machine is Part of Project Sputnik and is a “Linux Ready” machine and comes from the factory with Ubuntu 14.04.
The next version (Precision 5520) comes with Ubuntu 16.04, but when you install this Ubuntu version on the Precision 5510, many things are not working well, like audio or HiDPI support.
Would be great to have a Github repository (or organization) dedicated to the Sputnik project, I am pretty sure that the community will be glad to collaborate with documentation, Ubuntu packages, and configuration files to attune the laptops and workstations that become part of the Sputnik project.
I am building an Ansible playbook to automatically setup the missing configuration files and packages required to have an excellent user experience with this computer, will be fabulous to share this with the community.
Is possible to have access to Ubuntu 16.04.2 prepared for the model Precision 5520 under support section?

I agree with Walter Vargas. We really need a clear view on required packages for the drivers. When they buy a Dell with Ubuntu, customers (and me) are completely stuck when they want to upgrade properly to the next LTS version. There is no official information from Dell to do it. You have to search on forums and rely on those who tried before.
For example (it is the same for all), under 14.04 the factory configuration uses “trusty-dell-biz-vivid-skl” distribution from the dell.archive.canonical.com/updates repository. Which equivalent one is required for 16.06 (xenial not trusty) to replace this one (with a cryptic name) ? mystery.
Having access to, at least, a configuration list for packages at each new Ubuntu LTS version should be be very helpful

At this point we dont have plans to offer a dev edition of the 2-in-1. Although it may change in the future, we would need more resources to support it in a way that provided the type of customer experience that we want to deliver.

I need to say thx to Dell and Project Sputnik for the Precision 5520, I really love my piece of metal 🙂
I needed to spend some time to get the installation into a Full-Disk-Encrypted Partition, but it works like a charm for such new hardware.
Moved from Apple 13″ Retina, now must just works out of the box, without frustrating driver issues.
The same is true for the TB16, HotPlug with two UHD monitor *yeaha* 🙂
So i just want to say thx, I did not regret bought this laptop.

Great dell is doing a great job, but the price of Precision 5720 in Canada is almost twice higher than the one in US.
US: $1,699.00
CA: $3,255.71
I did not do any comparison between iMac(27 inches, ca$ 2,299.00 ) and Prescision, if Precision 5720 costs much more than iMac, I don’t know who will buy it with such a high price even USD is expensive than CAD.

I chatted with our Canadian team and learned the following: Canadian law requires that a product run at list price for 3 weeks before it can be discounted. This is not the case in the US so the price you are seeing on the US site is a discounted one. By next week the Canadian site will offer the Precision 5720 at a discount. As a result the pricing btwn the two countries should be much closer.

I needed a small portable linux laptop so I just bought a Latitude 7370 from the Dell outlet. It comes with Windows but I’m going to be blowing that away and installing Ubuntu. I wanted to get the XPS13 developer edition but the unusual keyboard and lack of physical buttons for the trackpad were deal breakers for me. I’m still looking for a larger 15 inch machine with more power for software development and would love to have something like the 5520 with the usual Latitude keyboard/pointing stick/buttons. (No numpad though!).

The 7370 arrived today and I went ahead and installed the Bios update for the Intel AMT vulnerability on it using the preinstalled Windows. I have not put linux on it yet but I did boot from a live CD and everything seems to be working well as far as I can tell. I like the Infinity Edge screen so much that I’m trying to convince myself I could get used to the keyboard and buttonless touchpad on the 5520.
