Sputnik 2 & Laika source: greatbigcanvas.com
When we launched the Ubuntu-based XPS 13 developer edition at the end of November we got a lot of great press. That being said, the two complaints we heard loud and clear were 1) the resolution is too low, and 2) it needs to be available outside the US and Canada. Since that time we have been working hard to address both.
As of today the XPS 13 developer edition comes with a Full HD (FHD) display (1920 x 1080) and has begun rolling out in Europe.
On beyond North America
For those in the USA and Canada Sputnik 2, the XPS 13 developer edition with the FHD display, is now available online. Across the pond Sputnik 2 has started rolling out and will be available online next week. I will post the links when they become available but here is the list of the countries where Sputnik 2 will be landing:
- Available online – France, Germany, UK, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland
- Available from your Dell rep – Israel, Luxembourg, Morocco, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UAE
With regards to the Asia Pacific region, we are currently evaluating options to introduce the XPS 13 developer edition in Australia and other countries in Asia, but don’t have details to share at this time. That being said, if you would like to help with the introduction, share your opinion in the comments 🙂
Product specs
The new FHD version of the XPS 13 developer edition will replace the existing unit. All other specs of this client-to-cloud solution will stay the same.
Here are the highlights:
- Processor: 3rd generation Intel i7
- Display: 13.3″ Full High Definition (1080p)
- System memory: 8GB
- Graphics: Intel HD graphics 4000
- Hard drive: 256GB SSD drive
- Standard Service: 1 year Dell ProSupport and onsite service after remote diagnostics
- Operating system: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
- Community projects: Cloud launcher and Profile tool
To reflect the upgrade to the improved display the new price for the solution will be $1,549.
What about the Cloud Launcher and Profile Tool?
Ever since we first announced that we were launching a project to explore the creation of an open source developer laptop, we talked about two associated community beta projects: The Cloud Launcher and the Profile Tool.
- Profile Tool: The idea behind the profile tool is to provide access to a library of community created profiles on github, such as Ruby and Android, to quickly set up your development environments and tool chains.
- Cloud launcher: The cloud launcher enables you to create “microclouds” on your laptop, simulating an at-scale environment, and then deploy that environment seamlessly to the cloud.
With the mad rush to get Sputnik and then Sputnik 2 out the door we haven’t focused as much attention on the associated projects as we would have liked. Now that the systems are going out the door we are looking to kick them up a notch. We will soon be taking the Profile Tool effort off of pause.
With regards to the Cloud launcher, we have big plans for it (its what puts the “cloud” in “client-to-cloud” solution). Today the launcher uses Juju to jettison application environments from the laptop, to the cloud. Recently though we have been working with Opscode to create another version that leverages Chef and that will connect to the Dell Cloud on Demand. We should have a demo and more available soon!

Hi George
I’m pretty disappointed with my Sputnik-Laptop. I’ve bought this laptop because of the out-of-the-box support for Ubuntu and because I liked to support that idea.
After a few weeks the keyboard was broken and a dell technician had to replace it in my living room. After 1 year another dell technician came to replace the motherboard because the computer sporadically restarted.
Now, 2 years lather I upgraded to 14.10, but because the fan was blowing air like an airplane, I installed 14.04, the officially long term Ubuntu version and suddenly the wireless connection keeps crashing with my Cisco wireless AP and others too. I mean, it is for sure not a problem of the access point, as even my cheap Hawaii phone and the Macbook Air works without any problems.
I’ve upgraded the firmware to A10 and reinstalled Ubuntu from scratch to make sure, that everything is, like is should be.
I’m just tired of reading forums and troubleshooting on my own any longer. As Dell already had to replace twice hardware parts in this computer I don’t want to open another support ticket. That’s why I decided to write you. Do you have an idea what I could try next?

Can Dell stop associating the Dell XPS 13 Ubuntu edition project with totalitarian Soviet imagery and themes? It’s an insult to Linux and everything it stands for and especially since I’m American. The philosophy of communism is totally opposed to the ideals of the Open Source movement. Microsoft and Windows is the operating system that embraces communist and totalitarian ideals. Microsoft hates free markets and utilizes central planning to distribute and build it’s system. If you want a new computer you have to buy Windows without a choice of buying one without an operating system installed or an alternative. This “forced distribution” of just a single system for everyone is totalitarian and communist in design. Microsoft hates the free market and are afraid of it.
Linux is about creating an operating system that fully embraces classical capitalist, free-market and libertarian ideals and creating a community and ecosystem that matches those principles. If George Washington or Alexander Hamilton were alive today they would be using RHEL, Arch, Debian or Ubuntu and would never ever use a proprietary system like Windows as it would violate their ideals of liberty and consumer choice. Firms and consumers have to be free to purchase systems according to their choices and should own those systems once purchased. This is the only right thing in our society and according to the rights of private property ownership…

Great job getting this out to the market. Two questions:
* Replacing Ubuntu with a distribution of my choice is all A-OK? There’s no magic involved compatibility wise, beyond standard kernel tree and drivers?
* Mini-DisplayPort – it’s capable of driving 2560×1440+ resolutions, right? Not like micro-HDMI which tops out at FHD.

* Do devs really need 8GB to write code in a text editor? 😉
* Does the CPU have a fan? If yes, are Linux drivers available to configure how annoying it is? 😉
Coffee shop questions:
* # of hours battery life?
* How powerful is the WIFI antenna?
* How long is the power cord? Because fast and thin = small battery draining quickly.
My initial impression: you don’t understand the Linux market. It looks like a Mac. To be a Linux user you are in that tiny die-hard minority, especially if you’re a developer. Just the fact we know what a driver is, that means we are crazy. We think Steve Jobs greatest accomplishment was killing off Flash. Linux geeks own the little screwdriver set. What, you can’t change the battery? (Insert Steve Jobs joke here.) This doesn’t look like a machine you can take apart. This makes Linux geeks sad. Are you getting the idea yet? Linux users are sophisticated. They know these thin machines, to look hip, must sacrifice durability, battery life, etc. I think if you want to sell to developers, you need to make a better Thinkpad than Lenovo. Linux geeks buy Thinkpads because they know they’ll get the drivers and benefit from that rich history. My 2 cents.

Regarding the second question:
You don’t want to adjust the fan speed; what you want is to ensure that the thermal dissipation of the CPU is low enough that the fan isn’t necessary. This can be accomplished using cpufreq.

According to Wikipedia, Mini-DisplayPort should be capable of resolutions up to 2560×1600.

You can replace the Ubuntu with another distro but the only distro Dell is officially supporting is Ubuntu. With another distro, you’ll need to apply the patchset that’s not yet necessarily upstream to your kernel by hand to get full support for wifi switch / touchpad / display brightness fixes. That being said, the wifi switch should be upstream and the the Cypress PS/2 Trackpad driver was just merged into the upstream Linux 3.9 kernel *today*!

Not getting Dell support for software is totally fine with me.
But indeed, I wasn’t aware with the hardware driver situation that every piece is so new, although it probably does make sense to build on top of latest and greatest. Thanks for letting us know.
Where is the patchset located? Temporarily applying stuff by hand not an issue at all.
I do hope what you’re saying is that all this fresh driver stuff has been built towards upstreaming from ground up, as in we aren’t going to be stuck with magic binary blobs restraining people to ancient kernels?
Still have to admit, though, the pricing of this thing isn’t particularly easy to digest. Europe adds another 20+% to everything. To me 30+% of the current $1500 price would be charged to the “Support Proper Linux Driver Development Cause” account. Dream scenario: $1000 == no complaints.

Personally I feel like the 15.6″ form-factor is a bit large. I currently have a Latitude D830 (which has dimensions 14.2″ x 10.3″ x 1.4″) which I feel is just a bit too large to be easily carried about. The XPS 15 is even larger that this and by no small margin (15″ x 10.4″ x 1.3″). I think somewhere between 14″ and 15″ would be an excellent compromise. Unfortunately, for reasons that escape me, no vendors that I know of offer form factors in this range. Perhaps the availability of cheap LCD panels is the concern here?

I would love to see a model with a powerful Quadro GPU to take advantage of CUDA when writing GPU accelerated apps. Perhaps putting together an Ubuntu ISO for the Precision notebooks?

To be clear, I’d consider an nVidia GPU to be a severe hardware impediment. Until there is open technical documentation for their hardware, I’d rather not support nVidia.

I agree with bgamari. I’d rather have Intel graphics. Nvidia’s drivers are pretty bad, especially Optimus. Intel’s Linux support is fantastic.

Hi, I think that the problem of not many configuration options for ram and ssd is not a problem if the user can upgrade these components himself (or herself) so the main question here is can I buy more ram and upgrade this laptop? Or is it soldered like the macbook pro retina

Howdy. Linux geek here. I’ve been a long-time Thinkpad user too.
I just have to say, YES, this is what we want. A 1080p screen on a laptop of that size is going to be just gorgeous. If my laptop were a little older, I’d go out and buy this XPS right now, but for now all I can do is urge you to KEEP THIS PRODUCTIVE ALIVE because my current laptop will need replacing sooner or later, and the Linux XPS will be at the top of my list.

Yes, but Dell sales team doesn’t seem to be aware of that.
I’ve called Dell France last week. None of the technical sales seemed to be aware of the Sputnik project. Neither were aware of what Ubuntu was. And when I said “Linux” they all went crazy and said Microsoft Windows was the only OS supported ever.
So I finally bough the one with Windows 8 last week and only saw your blog post few days later :S I was so pissed off.
So I asked for a return and called again today. After 30 minutes of “we do not support Linux”, I finally got someone who said “yes that will be available next Wednesday in France but the marketing team didn’t inform us”.
By the way when I search for “Dell XPS 13” on the Dell site search engine, I’ve got a beautiful “Dell recommends Windows.” message. Is it what the $2 billion Microsoft’s loan to Dell all about? :p
Anyway, thank you so much for making it happen! To me the price is OK, you did a really great job.
I already have the “old” XPS 13 Ultrabook (4GB of RAM, i7 and SSD 256) and I’m happy with it. But the 8GB of RAM will really make the difference as I use virtual machines quite a lot. Also the resolution was OK for my desktop environment and for the command line, but it’s right that for not well laid-out and designed IDE (like Eclipse) this resolution was a little bit too “short”.

We put the profile tool on hold to focus on getting Sputnik 2 out the door. Look for activity to start up again in a few weeks. We will do a few language profiles but will then look to the community to develop more.

Hi Claudio, if the developer edition is more expensive the windows version that is a mistake. The intention is price the Ubuntu version $50 less than the same config that comes with windows.

I see the confusion, although page for the windows version says “XPS 13 Ultrabook™ with optional Full HD Display”, the default prices listed on page are for the systems that come with the old 720p display. If you upgrade to the FHD display the cost will be increased $100.

Couldnt wait for thelaptop to be released in Australia so went ahead and ordered the windows one from the dell website looking forward to install ubuntu tomorrow but the updated project sputnik image on the website is broken.

+1 for Australia please. I could just go out and buy the XPS 13 and put Linux on it, but would love the opportunity to buy a preinstalled Linux laptop so I can send a little message back to Dell that people want this.
A lot of my Linux pals already buy Dell and put Linux on but there is no visibility of Linux installs to manufacturers – Sputnik gives us that opportunity.

I’m from Spain, and I’m waiting for the availability of the Sputnik 2 in Spain, but in the meantime I’ve seen the following product is listed and available in the dell.es (spanish) site:
E-Value code: N0013Z26
XPS13″ w/ the same specs. of the Sputnik 2. Price: 1.399€.
So I think is the same model and with the same specs. that the Sputnik 2 with the unique difference that this one comes with Windows 8 64bit instead of Ubuntu 12.04, but anyway I can install Ubuntu.
Do you have news about this?
No reference to Sputnik 2 or developer edition in XPS 13 pages in dell.es site.

The only thing that is missing now is an Ethernet port (and a Haswell processor but they are not out yet) and it will be a perfect laptop.
Sometimes you want to be connected without sacrificing one of the few USB ports.
I’m planning to buy one later this year so I will be very happy to get this two things.

Just asked here in Holland via Live Chat @ Dell. The answer I get is that it’s impossible to have an XPS13 with Ubuntu here in Holland. “Never heard about it’ Right…. I will stick to http://www.linuxcomputers.nl I really had liked to buy this machine, but please not with W8.
Apparently Dell isn’t serious about Ubuntu (yet again).

I asked a couple of times on Live Chat @ Dell over the last few weeks about availability in the UK – one of those times was even after 2013/02/18. On all occassions the people I spoke to had no knowledge of an XPS with Ubuntu so I gave up asking.
I’m still hopeful that it will appear at the end of the week as per Barton’s answer to my earlier question on here though.

If you can wait a few more days, the XPS 13 developer edition will be available online in Holland, as well as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.
Project Sputnik is operating at a fast and furious pace and did not start via the typical Dell processes. As a result, as we bring this former skunkworks project into the mainstream some of the communication has not yet caught up. There may be some minor hiccups along the way but our goal has always to get this solution out to developers as quickly as possible and drive continuous improvement from there.

Thanks George. I am soooo excited that finaly I can get a computer with decent specs pre-installed with Ubuntu. I’m happy you people have seen that Ubuntu is also a good proposition for high end hardware. A bit more marketing would not do any harm though 😉 Ubuntu is also ready for main stream imho and could let Dell stand apart from the herd.

I know it’s like training wheels, but can one dual-boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 with reasonably equivalent driver support on one of the Sputnik laptops?
The specs on this XPS 13 are about as close as I can get to perfect for my needs (will miss my D830 1920×1200 display, and would love 16GB RAM for VMs). And the price is about what I paid for my D830 way back when.

Yes you can. On http://debian.netside.net/xps13_linux.html I described a Debian-CentOS dual boot install on the first XPS13 generation that came out preloaded with Windows 8 just before the Ubuntu developer edition. While in this case Windows 8 was removed to make room for the two Linux flavors, you can shrink the Windows partition, create a new GPT partition in the free space and install Linux.
Conversely, if you have an Ubuntu developer edition machine, you could repartition the msdos table in GPT format and make room for both Ubuntu and Windows.

Many reviewers say that the only thing keeping the Windows version of the XPS 13 from being the perfect laptop is an unreliable trackpad. Is that also a problem while running Ubuntu? Is it an old problem that has since been dealt with?

I’m very interested in this ultrabook. I like how thin and light it is. However, with such small footprint comes some inconvenients like less ports: no vga port, no ethernet port and no hdmi port. I know there’s usb adapters for all that. But I would like to know if this ultrabook is compatible with some docking stations like the targus usb 3.0 superslim dual video docking station which is advertised on dell’s website as compatible with the xps 13 running windows.

(If a dedicated GPU [preferrable Radeon] is incorporated you should be able to turn in off in the BIOS! Optional add thunderbold interface.)

In regards to Sven’s “Wanted spces” my dram hw specs is just about the same (as I posted here yesterday, but the comment has not appeared in this thread yet). I just wish that in addition it will have RJ-45 network port or at least Linux compatible docking station solution. The dedicated GPU is not that important, as the Intel HD 4000 is just enough for laptop use.

I already wanted a Ethernet port. It can be a solution with an adapter (to spare space), but it must be a full-featured ethernet port (GBit).
I agree that the Intel HD4600 or HD5200 should be sufficent.

I just saw teh annoucement of the Dell Precision M3800 Workstation. Could this be the basis for another Dell Linux Laptop?
Just remove the Nvidia and use only the integrated Iris Pro 5200 graphics card and use the saved space for battery.
Add an ethernet port and this would be the perfect machine!

As I mentioned to Sven and Alan, this was a glitch that resulted when we switched promotions and the XPS 13 developer edition got knocked offline by mistake. The UK team is working on this right now to get it back online ASAP.

It seems that the XPS 13 developer edition is no longer available in the UK. The disappointment is palpable at this end it took me quite a long time to decide to go for it, obviously too long. Not sure if Dell UK are just not interested or if there wasn’t enough interest in this model from customers. Had quite a long talk with the sales person and this seemed to be the view he had. I will probably wait until the next generation of intel processors appear and then have a look again.

This work that you DELL and Canonical are doing it’s just outstanding for all Linux users that have wasted hours and days trying to set up a decent “workstation” to develop software or manage servers. Also because you’re doing this not from the business perspective because we Linux users know that we are minority. Really I just don’t what else to say but THANK YOU! a lot!!
I would like to see this Dell XPS 13 Devs Edition Ubuntu in more countries that had a lot of developers community too, some of they, India, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, etc… And of course I would like to own one of these, I’m in Mexico, and I can’t get it, windows 8 version neither. So I want to ask for a Latin America availability please.
Or at least (may be it isn’t up to you… but I’m gonna try) make Dell USA do shipping outside USA. I wouldn’t mind to get the USA keyboard layout.
Anyway thanks a lot for all this work, and only for a little input, will be nice to make this Dell XPS 13 upgradable in RAM and SDD.
