Mark Shuttleworth, the ever gracious founder of Ubuntu, stopped by Dell this morning to talk to various folks about various subjects. I was able to grab some time with him between meetings and get his thoughts on a few topics.
I was particularly interested in getting his thoughts on Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) which will be available this week from Dell as the Dell | Canonical UEC Solution (along with the UEC software, the solution is based on our PowerEdge C2100 and C6100 and comes with a reference architecture and deployment guide). The other topic I wanted to get his insight into was OpenStack.

Wow… how the heck can he talk about Dell and NOT talk about the HORRIBLE experience it is to buy a DELL computer that had Ubuntu on it.
I bought a Mini 9 netbook 2-3 years ago and the visibility back then was zero and availability in many countries was just about the same, support staff totally unaware that this even existed in their company..
THe Ubuntu on DELL experience has been a total disaster… its almost like someone made DELL do sonething and out of spite they made it impossible to find DellBuntu computers.
This isnt a personal comment only, go around the blogs and boards, everyone had high hopes for this partnership, I even put my money where my mouth was and would have done it again had there been an effort, ANY effort on Dell part.
I understand that consumer and business is two separate things but is about perception: most Linux supporters have been deeply disappointed by the Dell-Ubuntu effort on the desktop, many have deemed it a failure.
Hearing Dell-Ubuntu in another context still revives memory of this failure,.

As Barton mentioned, I’m sorry to see that you had a bad experience. No question that Dell needs to improve visibility on Ubuntu options so more customers are aware.
When e first rolled it out in 2007,we had a dedicated place on Dell.com to find Ubuntu options. Since then, we’ve added navigational options for Linux on the left hand side, and worked to make the search results for Linux and Ubuntu another way to find.
Dell has offered select consumer and SMB systems with Ubuntu pre-installed since 2007, and are continuing to do so. Ubuntu options vary by country. Some of our current systems available with Ubuntu include Inspiron 14 and 15 laptops, the Inspiron Mini 10 netbook, the Studio XPS 7100 desktops, and Vostro laptops including the V130, 1014, and 1015.
Currently, customers can find Ubuntu products on the Dell.com website by entering “Ubuntu” into the search box on our home page. The results of this search will produce a full list of Dell systems currently available with Ubuntu, as you can see by clicking on the following link: Dell.com Ubuntu Search.
For future product introductions we are continually evaluating opportunities to support Linux OS options.
